Product listing benchmark 2026: research protocol before results

This page defines how Aisle could study listing clarity, evidence, claim boundaries, and content structure. It publishes no sample, scores, rankings, findings, or marketplace comparisons yet.

Protocol components

What must be specified before collecting listings

Pre-registration reduces the temptation to turn a convenient sample into an authoritative market claim.

Research questions

Define which observable listing characteristics are being studied and avoid inferring sales or buyer behavior from content alone.

Sampling frame

Specify markets, platforms, categories, dates, inclusion rules, exclusions, and how listings will be selected.

Coding guide

Operationalize observable variables such as dimensions shown, package contents, claim evidence, image purpose, and disclosed limitations.

Quality controls

Use reviewer training, double coding, disagreement handling, versioned instruments, and a transparent missing-data policy.

Proposed research sequence

How the benchmark would be conducted

No step below has produced a public result. Collection should begin only after the protocol, rights review, and resources are approved.

01

Freeze the protocol

Publish the questions, definitions, sampling rules, exclusions, analysis plan, and expected limitations before collection.

02

Build the sample

Record platform, market, category, observation date, selection path, and any unavailable or duplicate listings.

03

Train and test coders

Pilot the coding guide on a separate set, revise ambiguous variables, and measure reviewer agreement.

04

Code observable content

Record only what a reviewer can see and substantiate; do not infer conversion, sales, seller intent, or product truth.

05

Analyze with uncertainty

Report denominators, missingness, distributions, reviewer agreement, sensitivity checks, and category differences.

06

Publish reproducibly

Release the instrument, methodology, field dates, limitations, corrections process, and permissible aggregate data.

Protocol demonstration

Example coding unit—not a finding

The item below shows how one variable could be defined. It is not based on a collected listing and contributes to no score.

Hypothetical coding example — zero research results

Variable: dimensions communicated

Proposed benchmark instrument

Eligible evidence

Exact dimensions visible in seller-controlled copy, specifications, or an image, with units that a reviewer can record.

Not sufficient

Phrases such as compact, large, spacious, or fits anywhere without an observable measurement.

Coding states

Present, absent, ambiguous, or not applicable, with a note field for reviewer uncertainty.

Interpretation limit

Presence of dimensions does not establish accuracy, buyer comprehension, conversion impact, or marketplace quality.

No findings to cite

This page is a protocol, not a benchmark report

Until a documented sample is collected and analyzed, no numbers, leaders, platform comparisons, or category conclusions should be attributed to this project.

No listings have been sampled, coded, scored, ranked, or compared for this public protocol.

There are no 2026 findings, averages, percentages, marketplace leaders, category winners, or performance correlations to cite.

The proposed variables assess observable content, not factual product quality, sales performance, conversion, or buyer satisfaction.

Future collection must address platform terms, copyright, privacy, sampling bias, missing data, and reviewer agreement.

Any future report must separate pre-registered analysis from exploratory findings and publish material corrections.
